Reception Spring Term 1 – Exploring the Polar Regions!

Welcome back everyone! We are so excited to begin our Spring Term adventure together here in Reception. This term is set to be chilled with excitement as we explore the Polar Regions – a magical wintery world filled with shimmering ice, incredible animals, and fascinating facts!

Our journey will take us all the way to Antarctica, where we’ll learn about what life is like in one of the coldest places on Earth. We’ll discover how animals such as seals, whales, and – of course – penguins survive in such extreme conditions. To make this topic even more special, we have a fantastic visit lined up from a guest speaker from the National Antarctic Research Centre, who will share what it’s really like to study and live among the ice!

In Literacy, we’ll be diving into both fiction and non-fiction books all about penguins. Through these stories, we’ll learn how to tell fact from imagination and explore the wonderful world of reading. Our phonics learning will continue to grow as we focus on digraphs (two letters, one sound!) and practise reading and writing our tricky words – we’re building great reading confidence every day!

In February the children will enjoy learning about Lunar New Year, the Year of the Horse. They will explore how families around the world celebrate this special festival with colourful decorations, stories and traditions. The children will learn that the horse is a symbol of energy, kindness and hard work, and they will share ideas through role play, art and simple stories. It will be a fun way to learn about different cultures and celebrate together.

Over in Maths, we’ll be taking on new number challenges as we begin to explore addition and subtraction. We’ll also be learning about one more and one less, and even discovering doubles of numbers. Through fun games and hands-on activities, we’ll turn numbers into stories and make learning meaningful and exciting.

The children continue their weekly Forest School sessions every Friday morning. They will explore the outdoor environment, learning about nature through hands-on activities such as den building, exploring, and observing wildlife. The children will develop confidence, teamwork and independence as they play and learn outdoors in all weathers. These sessions will support curiosity, resilience and a love of the natural world.

This term will be full of curiosity, creativity, and discovery. We can’t wait to see our Reception children blossom as brave explorers, clever mathematicians, and confident readers and writers.

Let’s wrap up warm and get ready for a term that’s truly cool in every way! ❄️????✨
