Homework

Homework at St Anne’s Primary School

At St Anne’s Primary School, our approach to homework is rooted in our Christian vision, “Do everything in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14). Homework is not viewed as an isolated task, but as an opportunity for children and families to work together to reinforce learning, build positive habits and develop character.

Our homework policy is designed to support children in consolidating key skills, developing independence and preparing for future learning, while recognising the importance of family time and wellbeing. We aim to strike a careful balance between high expectations and a manageable, purposeful workload.

Our Homework Fundamentals

Homework at St Anne’s focuses on the areas that have the greatest impact on children’s progress and long-term success:

Reading – Developing a love of reading is at the heart of all learning. Regular reading at home builds vocabulary, comprehension and confidence across the curriculum.
Spelling – Weekly spelling practice supports accurate writing and helps children apply spelling patterns and rules effectively in their work.
Times Tables – Secure times table knowledge underpins success in many areas of mathematics, including fractions, percentages and problem-solving. Regular practice builds fluency, confidence and resilience.

These core expectations apply to all pupils (with age-appropriate adjustments), ensuring consistency, fairness and clarity for families.

Alongside these non-negotiables, teachers may also provide optional maths activities linked to recent classroom learning, allowing pupils to deepen understanding where appropriate.

Working in Partnership

We believe that children achieve best when school and home work together. Our homework approach encourages resilience, creativity, respect and joy, while remaining flexible and supportive of individual circumstances. Teachers provide clear guidance, and parents are encouraged to contact the school if they have any questions or need support.

Our aim is for homework to be purposeful, inclusive and meaningful — helping every child to flourish academically and personally.
